Asian Art in London: Robert Hales and Davinder Toor at The Weiss Gallery

October 31, 2018

The Weiss Gallery has great pleasure in hosting two renowned Asian Art dealers this Asian Art Week (1 - 10 November 2018). This is the first time that Robert Hales and Davinder Toor have exhibited in Asian Art London.

ROBERT HALES

Robert Hales’s passion for antiques, travel and the Orient began with an overland trip to India in 1966. Within a year he had jettisoned his job as a fledgling microbiologist to begin a career specialising in antique Islamic and Oriental arms and armour. For almost thirty years he had a gallery in Kensington Church Street, London, where the atmosphere was decidedly informal. He has supplied many of the world’s leading museums and collections with some of the finest items to surface on the market.

DAVINDER TOOR

Davinder Toor is a leading figure among a new generation of Indian & Islamic art collectors and dealers. He has acted as a consultant to major private collectors, auction houses and institutions such as the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and Wallace Collection. He currently lectures on the Arts of the Royal Sikh Courts for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s prestigious ‘Arts of Asia’ course. Objects from the Toor Collection of Sikh Art have been exhibited at major global institutions including at the Kunst halle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung (Munich), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Brunei Gallery (London). Both collection and collector were also featured on the BBC’s ‘Lost Treasures of the Sikh Kingdom’ (2014) and ‘The Stolen Maharajah: Britain's Indian Royal'(2018) documentaries. Davinder is a familiar figure in and around the galleries and auction rooms of London and New York. When not collecting Sikh art, or dealing in fine Indian & Islamic works of art, he runs his own pharmaceutical services business.
