This finely painted portrait of an unknown youth in a fashionable gold slashed doublet and fine reticella dropped lace collar, has traditionally been identified as a young ‘royalist’ by William Honthorst. Although the latter attribution is unlikely, the sitter would clearly have moved in courtly circles, from his expensive clothing and can be dated on fashion to the 1630s.
