Recently exhibited in the show Renaissance Faces at the National Gallery, London, this newly discovered masterpiece is of major significance to the study of French portraiture. It is one of only ten portraits accepted as fully attributable, with preparatory drawings extant, to Jean Clouet, the court portraitist to François I.

Our portrait is also notable for its illustrious provenance, having passed through the hands of the French royal family, Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill, the Earl of Northbrook and the Rothschild family and more ignominiously confiscated by the Nazi Party during the Second World War to form part of Goering’s collection before being restituted.
